> THE EVENT
Produced by “Atelier du bruit”, the ecouterparis site offers soundtracks for exploring the French capital without wearing out your shoe leather. Voices, background murmurs and other hubbubs of the city are compiled in sound recordings to sketch out an all-new urban landscape. Solely through the magic of sound, web users can board a river boat, push open the door to a boutique in the Goutte d’or, or meet Geneviève who tells tales of pre-War Montmartre … Along the same lines, the lesvoixdelaville site gives you the opportunity to stroll through the city in the company of testimonies from its inhabitants. Designed as a tool for communicating with the populations, this site will be enriched over time with new sound content, with everyone invited to contribute.
> THE ANALYSIS
If silence is the virtue of the countryside, what would a city be without its traffic and communication noises? Just like its history and architecture, noise is part of a city’s heritage. An intangible heritage, it is true, but no less part of its identity, as we are reminded by these sound mapping sites, dreamt up to discover what the inhabitants are saying, and the atmospheres of the streets, both of yesterday and today. What it all amounts to, is that a city also exists through the words of those who live there, which can fire the imagination anew. Is it also a way of meeting the current desire of city dwellers to feel their environment as well as living it?
